Ward Cunningham

I was inspired by A Pattern Language which we studied while founding the Pattern Languages of Programming (PLoP) conferences and the Portland Pattern Repository which became the original wiki five years before the encyclopedia.

I've shared most of my experience with Michael Mehaffy who is quick to point out that we computer programmers have made more use of patterns than anyone in the built world. Now with a new and quite unusual implementation of wiki we may have returned the favor.

In these pages we will excerpt patterns from the new Sustasis Press volume, A Pattern Language for Growing Regions. Our hope is to find the best expression of this work in the new medium where growth in the community of authors is our primary concern.

We will borrow freely from the source mostly by editing for brevity as appropriate online. We will cite related material following a full-stop page fold as we become aware of it.
